Paiewonsky and Wilkinson Perform in I-10 Trombone Conspiracy

The "I-10 Trombone Conspiracy" is a trombone faculty artist recital featuring UA Professor of Trombone Moisés Paiewonsky and ASU Faculty Associate in Jazz Studies Mike Wilkinson, presented by the Schools of Music at The University of Arizona (UA) and Arizona State University (ASU).

This show has been presented twice, first at ASU on Monday, August 31, 2009 and second at UA on Friday, October 2, 2009. At ASU, Moisés and Mike performed along with ASU Director of Jazz Studies Mike Kocour on piano and ASU Faculty Associates in Jazz Studies Justin Brotman, bass; Dom Moio, drums; and Jeff Libman, guitar. At UA, they were joined by UA Director of Jazz Studies Jeff Haskell on piano; and Tucson musicians Jack Wood, bass; and Fred Hayes, drums.

This program serves not only as a vehicle for collaboration and exchange between UA and ASU faculty members, but also provides an opportunity for reflection upon the history of jazz trombone (especially as it pertains to famous duos). The duo performs tunes that reminisce upon and pay homage to some timeless trombone pairs such as J.J. Johnson/Kai Winding and Frank Rosolino/Carl Fontana. The program also highlights works written and/or performed by more contemporary trombone duos such as John Allred/Wycliffe Gordon, Jim Pugh/Eijiro Nakagawa, and Michael Davis/Bill Reichenbach.

Moisés and Mike have recently been invited to perform this program at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. If you are interested in knowing more or in bringing this show to your venue, please feel free to contact either Moisés at mpaiewon@email.arizona.edu or Mike at mswilkin@asu.edu. To view a sample of the duo, please feel free to watch on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-BqIvIzm8s.

Michael Wilkinson is a Faculty Associate in Jazz Studies at ASU in addition to being a DMA student in Trombone Performance. He has earned a Master's Degree in Trombone Performance from ASU, a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from UA, and is an alumnus of the Disney/Grammy All-American College Jazz Band at EPCOT Center. Prior to his appointment as a faculty member at ASU and moving to Phoenix to pursue graduate school, Michael spent 8 ½ years teaching middle school band in Tucson, AZ and building his program into one of the best in the region. Also while in Tucson, he was the musical director, lead trombonist, sound engineer, and auxiliary percussionist for Descarga (a Salsa band) for 9 years. Michael plays tenor, bass, alto trombone, and euphonium and has studied with Tom Ervin, Gail Wilson, Ralph Sauer, and Sam Pilafian.
