Classical and Jazz Assistantships at Colorado State

The Colorado State University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance has openings for potential trombone graduate assistants in both jazz and classical concentrations.

The jazz-specific GTA position involves teaching undergraduate jazz combos, administrative work in the Jazz Area, and supplementary teaching in jazz classes including theory and composition. Performance in Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Combo I is also a requirement, so a successful candidate will have a high level of skill in both performance and pedagogy. These GTAs earn the Master’s in Jazz Studies. Recent guest artists have included Marshall Gilkes, John Fedchock, and Nick Finzer.

The non-jazz GTA positions involve work primarily associated with large lecture classes serving as course assistants. Occasionally, this involves teaching, but mostly it involves attendance and grading. Participation in large classical and jazz ensembles is expected, as is chamber music. These GTAs earn the Master’s in Music Performance.

Led by Dr. Chris Van Hof, the Trombone Studio at CSU is active and thriving. Guest artists this year include Joseph Alessi, James Nova, Kirsten Warfield, Gerry Pagano, and Ilan Morgenstern. The CSU Trombone Choir performs throughout Colorado, and will soon tour nationally. Located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins and Colorado’s Front Range is a thriving urban area with many opportunities to teach and perform for musicians. Graduate study at CSU is a perfect balance of high musical expectations, career preparation, and boundless natural beauty.

For more information, contact Dr. Chris Van Hof at christopher.van_hof@colostate.edu. Be sure to indicate which GTA position interests you.
