“Seven routines using familiar songs to improve technique” is the basis for Reusch’s Daily Routine Songbook for Trombone. The book is written for an elementary through middle school trombone student level and includes a routine titled for each day of the week. The range is limited, from low E to g1 and is accessible for trombones without an F-attachment. It is a great way for students to start developing their ear early on using familiar tunes in keys other than B-flat or F major. Similar to David Vining’s Daily Routine books, each routine is broken up into seven categories; key signature, dynamics, articulation, slide technique, intonation, high range, and low range. All of the categories are tied together using familiar songs. A good example can be found in the first routine, Monday, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The melody is written in four different keys for the first portion of the routine. Each category emphasizes a new tune in which the technique should be practiced. The featured songs range in variety from elementary music to folk melodies to popular melodies in classical music. There are many great elementary to intermediate trombone studies available and this is one to add to your teaching repertoire.
