The original key of Pavane is F-sharp minor. This transcription is in F minor and is scored for piccolo trumpet in B-flat, 3 trumpets in B-flat, horn in F, 3 tenor trombones, bass trombone and tuba. All parts except tuba have some melodic interest. First or second trombones play the main melody for 41 out of 105 measures, and bass trombone for 4. One or more of the trombones plays in every measure. Trombone range for first is c-flat-a-flat1, for second and third, G-b-flat1 and F-a-flat1 respectively, and for bass trombone C-flat-e1. All parts are given in bass clef. First trumpet tops out at c2. This excellent arrangement is well-suited to a student ensemble. Justin Chiang is a bass trombonist and recent graduate of Indiana University.
