Jazz Improvisation: Practical Approaches to Grading provides wonderful insight for jazz educators seeking ideas on how to grade jazz improvisation. It should be noted that this study focuses on ensemble classes instead of applied lessons. The text begins with a discussion about the purpose and rationale for taking a closer look at how to grade improvisation. The following chapters include a self-study for the reader before revealing answers from over 35 jazz educators with an average of more than 15 years of teaching experience. Participant answers reveal information such as grading philosophy, grading policy and criteria, course topics, and if and how creativity is graded. García also provides a summary from a panel discussion he presented in the past. This discussion is centered on whether or not creativity in jazz improvisation should be evaluated. Chapters featuring the importance of personal reflection and the development of dual competencies provide engaging questions in regards to structuring and evaluating the jazz improvisation class when taking dual competencies into account. The remaining chapters include a sampling of unique and successful teaching methods from each of the survey respondents, commentary on the disappointments and delights experienced while teaching jazz improvisation, and recommendations towards related resources. Antonio García has authored a great resource for jazz educators. Jazz Improvisation: Practical Approaches to Grading brings thought-provoking questions to the table. There is sure to be something of value here for any educator searching for additional methods of evaluation.
