Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Gypsy Song & Dance: for trombone and piano

Arranged by Ralph Sauer

N.p., ,
Publisher: Cherry Classics Music
Date of Publication: 2012

Piano score and solo part.

Primary Genre: Solo Tenor Trombone - with piano

Originally published as part of a four movement suite for violin and piano, Ralph Sauer scored these contrasting movements for tenor trombone and piano. Typical of many late nineteenth century character pieces for solo violin, the Song has a soaring melodic line over a piano accompaniment mainly comprised of rich, densely voiced harmonies. In contrast, the Dance is full of off-beat accents and rhythmic interjections between the two parts juxtaposed with a secondary lyrical section.

With a trombone part that spans in range from G-sharp to d2, the Gypsy Song & Dance is well suited to anyone with good flexibility and a strong high register and is a great study in articulation, style, and ensemble. The contrast in dramatic energy between the two movements creates an excellent opportunity for the well-rounded trombonist to showcase a variety of skills.

As we have come to expect from Cherry Classics Music, both the trombone and accompaniment parts are well edited for clarity and legibility. The Gypsy Song & Dance is a perfect addition to any recital program or jury evaluation while simultaneously exposing a student to a wonderful gem from the solo violin repertoire.
