Score and solo part

Primary Genre: Solo Tenor Trombone - with piano

The title of this work describes its two themes, which are not necessarily distinct fanfare and processional sections. The opening fanfare theme begins in the trombone part and is punctuated by occasional piano chords. The melodic and rhythmic material of the processional theme is drawn from the fanfare but is changed into a simple lyrical melody, which is sequenced and passed back and forth between the performers. Both themes reappear throughout the work and are developed extensively by the trombone in an Allegro section, accompanied by a rhythmic and syncopated sixteenth note pattern in the piano. The work concludes with a return to material from the fanfare theme. This is a challenging work, utilizing bass and tenor clefs. The range of the work is GG-c², requiring a strong low range from the trombonist—particularly the ending which concludes with a fortissimo (pedal) GG. This work will function well as a standalone piece, or in the opening of a recital. Importantly, it adds to the catalog of works for trombone composed by women.
