Score and parts

Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 5 brass

This ‘Comic Overture’ has become a favorite in the wind band repertoire. Originally for orchestra, the piece is reminiscent of an afternoon at the opera. The somber, melodramatic opening gives way to a light, quick-paced Allegro vivo interrupted occasionally by fortissimo passages.

Articulations, dynamics and tempo markings are clear in this straight-forward arrangement. There are few rests in any of the parts. Extreme dynamic changes between phrases, with few rests, make it important for all of the players to have a solid plan for breathing. This piece is suitable for advanced students in a chamber ensemble program and is a solid piece for a professional ensemble to perform as incidental music.
