Giuseppe Verdi’s Va Pensiero, the Chorus of the Hebrew slaves from his opera Nabucco, stands as one of the epic moments in opera history. After its stunning reception in 1842, it became a rallying cry for the national unification movement in Italy and is deeply imbedded in the country’s national consciousness.  In the last decade there has even been a drive, albeit unsuccessful, to replace Italy’s current national anthem with this famous chorus.

David Fetter’s arrangement of Va Pensiero for six trombones and organ is straightforward yet compelling. The organ part contains the original orchestra parts, and the trombones take the part of the chorus. The trombone parts are not difficult. They remain almost entirely within the staff and often play in unison. They could be competently performed by high school level trombonists. Articulations and dynamics are carefully marked to represent the style of the original work. The organ part is considerably more difficult and will need an advanced performer. According to my organist colleague, the part may need some editing.

This arrangement of Va Pensiero will be a captivating addition to trombone choir recitals. The music is powerful and historically important. From a performer’s standpoint it is an opportunity for a mid-recital “chop break” while still receiving the satisfaction of performing a work of great substance.
