Primary Genre: Trombone Ensembles - 7 trombones

As the composer notes in the score, Recursion is a rondo in seven parts for seven trombones that was commissioned by seven universities and premiered in seven states. A series of pyramid entrances on a short sixteenth note fanfare figure marks the recurring A section of the rondo. The first contrasting section contains a chorale section in the upper parts accompanied by an interesting syncopated, hocket bass line shared by the two bass trombone parts. The opening pyramid figure appears as commentary or accompaniment in these sections as well. The other contrasting section starts in 7/8 meter and then transitions into a short fugato. Rhythmic security and independence are required of all in the ensemble. Ranges are reasonable and not too taxing. The upper bass trombone part could be played on tenor trombone if needed. This is a well-constructed and energetic piece with a lot of contrast and rhythmic vitality that might open a program nicely. Recursion can be performed by a septet or larger trombone choir and is suitable for an advanced high school group or any college trombone ensemble.
