Brass players are familiar with this festive and celebratory work. This creative and challenging arrangement by Melbourne-based trombonist Andrew Heading works quite well and features horn and trombone in prominent roles. After an initial statement with all instruments playing, the trumpets drop out leaving a brass trio for the next two sections. Horn and trombone carry the melody, with plenty of sixteenth notes throughout. Trumpets re-enter and build to the end of the piece. The arrangement is scored for piccolo trumpet in A, trumpet 2 in D, horn, trombone (bass clef), and tuba. Alternate parts are provided for piccolo trumpet in B-flat and trumpet 2 in C. Written-pitch ranges: picc. trumpet – c1 to f2, trumpet 2 – c1 to g2, horn – e1 to a2, trombone – A to b1, and tuba – EE to a.

The score and parts are clear and easy to read. Use of piccolo trumpet and extended range required in all of the individual parts suggest this is best suited for advanced students or professional performers. This is a shortened version of the original movement, an excellent arrangement.
