Fanfare was commissioned in 2001 by the State University of New York at Stony Brook to celebrate the grand opening of the University’s new Music Library. It was performed at the library opening on November 28, 2001 by the Metropolitan Brass Quintet. While its title implies a standard brass fanfare style, the piece defies expectations by incorporating several complexities like rapidly-changing time signatures, several areas with sustained harmonies, and complete part independence for at least half of the composition. The composer is extremely clear with her dynamics and other style indications, presenting a clean score and parts for the musicians. However, there are multiple difficulties inherent in the parts that may prevent immediate accessibility. These include a low-sitting horn range, extending from F to d2 concert pitch, extremely fast mute changes, tenor clef and glissandos in the tuba/bass trombone part, and glissandos that span beyond a partial in the tenor trombone part.

Presenting a counting and reading challenge for most intermediate players, this piece is best-suited for an advanced college quintet or higher. It offers opportunities to develop intricate ensemble skills and musical independence.
