Score and parts

Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 5 brass

This piece is written in the popular Cuban and Puerto Rican dance style called salsa. The word “Metálica” in the title refers to the Spanish translation of “metallic,” as this piece is a salsa written for “metal musical instruments.” In her notes, the composer admits that it was an “entertaining challenge” to transfer the essence of traditional salsa music into the brass quintet instrumentation, but her product is straightforward with clear intent.

Its form is simple, with a middle solo section for first trumpet. A solo is written out but the player may opt to improvise. Aside from the introduction, the closing, and the trumpet feature, all other sections contain repeats. This gives the players more time to sit in a particular groove, but increases the repetitive nature of the piece. The meter is Alla Breve throughout and the key is G major. Rhythmic content encompasses standard salsa rhythms without much deviation, aside from the trumpet solo. This quintet is perfect for high school or early college groups to diversify their concert program away from the standard literature and to expand their rhythmic palate.
