Interplay is one of six brass solo compositions titled Adventures in Brass. They were commissioned by M. Dee Stewart, Director of CAP ventures (College Auditions Preparation) at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. The works were composed for an intermediate technical level performer without compromising the composer’s stylistic idiom. Interplay alternates lyrical playing with modest range and technical demands. The musical style features chromaticism that is tonally anchored but not functional in the traditional sense. This is excellent music for an advanced high school level performer but at the same time appropriate for inclusion on degree or professional recitals.
