Randall Malmstrom’s arrangement of Schubert’s Scherzo is a substantial but jovial work for trombone choir. Arranged in the original key of C major, Malmstrom gives the trombone choir a chance to perform a wonderful piece of orchestral repertoire while staying true to the original color and timbre of the work. Written for six tenor trombones and two bass trombones, it features the full extent of the range of the instruments with the first trombone soaring up to d2 and the bass trombones plunging down to GG. This work is best performed by a strong ensemble with much experience. The writing is extremely well thought out, allowing rest for higher parts when needed, eliminating some of the original repeats, and allowing all eight parts to be showcased during their individual moments. The intricate melody is seamlessly passed among all of the musicians, staying as true as possible to Schubert’s original orchestration. Notation is clear and thoughtful, with the appropriate articulation markings and dynamic changes replicating the original composition. If you are looking for a challenging yet exciting work to add to your next program, this piece is a stellar selection.
