Score and parts.

Primary Genre: Trombone Ensembles - 4 trombones

This publication is a somewhat restrained setting of the familiar holiday carol. The melody is arranged in triple meter with an indicated tempo of quarter=95. The tune is often presented in juxtaposed duets where one presents a harmonized melodic line and the other presents a harmonized counter-melody, but unison and homophonic textures are also incorporated. Harmonies frequently include added sixths, sevenths, or ninths. Technical challenges lie well within the high school player’s ability. Pitch range for the individual parts remain in comfortable spans with the highest pitches in both trombone 1 and 2 parts being a and g respectively. The lowest pitch for trombone 3 and 4 parts is F. A notable concern is the absence of expressive markings, which create unnecessary challenges in initial readings. At times, the melody is passed among parts without indication. The ensemble reading the arrangement initially expressed uncertainty about it. Opinion improved, but only after additional time and effort were expended to address ensemble issues. This arrangement can be useful for holiday performances, but be prepared to spend a little extra time during the initial reading.
