Hydra is a programmatic composition by Alice Gomez, director of programs for the San Antonio (TX) College Department of Music. Ms. Gomez is a member of ASCAP and has served as the Composer in Residence with the San Antonio Symphony, the Midland Odessa Symphony, and the Performing Arts Center of Gallop New Mexico. Hydra is based on the Greek myth of Hercules, who as penance for crimes was given the task of killing the Hydra, a water serpent with nine heads. The program notes provide a much more extensive background on the myth which outlines the structure of the piece. The piece is primarily in 7/8 meter but the composer utilizes many meter changes and is quite specific in articulation direction. The overall effect is an exciting and interesting composition with an intense, climactic ending.

There are a few elements of concern. First, few dynamic contrasts are given in the work, and none under mf. This can lead to a one dimensional performance. Second, the layering of ideas through the parts, while creating interesting effects, means the full five-piece ensemble is playing for the majority of the work. This can result in a stagnant texture and also in fatigue for trumpet two and horn, which are afforded little rest. Lastly a few of the repeated sections tend to last too long and if not thoughtfully performed, the piece loses momentum during these sections. The tuba part is quite low and will require high quality articulation to provide the clarity desired. Few other range or technical problems exist for the college level or professional player. Score and parts are clear and easily readable. This is an interesting work that, given thoughtful preparation, can be an exciting and enjoyable piece for both performer and audience.
