Piano score and solo part

Primary Genre: Solo Tenor Trombone - with piano

Winner of the 2011-2012 British Trombone Society Concerto Composition Competition, Todd Goodman’s Trombone Concerto is a significant new addition to the trombone solo repertoire. Composed for Kevin McManus, it is a heavyweight piece that explores the full range and capabilities of the tenor trombone as a solo instrument. American Todd Goodman is a four-time winner of the ASCAPlus award for his increased contribution to new music. This edition features an excellent piano reduction created by the composer.

The first of three movements features a majestic, soaring melody line that gradually develops into an energy filled, dance motive by the end. The middle movement provides contrast with a slower, more mysterious sounding melody played with bucket mute. The third movement, played attacca from the second, is a return to the majestic, energetic style. It increases demands on the soloist in terms of technique and range until the end, when it finishes with a flourish.

The biggest challenges for the performer will be in the areas of range and endurance, especially in the outer movements. The piece features many extended, high, tenor clef sections with several instances of both e-flat2 and e2. The range and scope of the piece make it a challenging but rewarding work for advanced college/university students or professional performers. Score and parts are clear and easy to read.
