Primary Genre: Trombone Ensembles - 4 trombones

Originally composed for SATB voices, Ralph Sauer’s transcription is identical to the original sacred motet in almost every way except for necessary adjustments made for accessibility. Lowered a whole step from E to D Phrygian, the first trombone part reaches g1 and the fourth part plays down to D, playable by tenor trombone with an f-attachment. Vocal notation and beaming has also been altered to make reading easier. Trombone 1 is given in tenor clef and parts 2, 3, and 4 are written in bass clef. Sauer adds appropriate articulation and style markings so that the trombonist can emulate the consonants of the words in the original vocal part.

This transcription will be of interest to those collecting sacred music to play at mass or other appropriate religious services with or without accompanying voices. While Pange Lingua is a sacred work, it functions effectively in secular settings as well. Because of its varying stylistic markings and terraced dynamics, this transcription should be of interest to trombone choir directors looking for a beautiful work to help the choir achieve blend, balance, and intonation within their ensemble.
