Capriccio for trombone solo is a real tour-de-force with modern flare. This challenging six-and-a-half-minute work uses large leaps, glissandi, buzz glissandi, lip trills, and false tones. The work is continuous over a form cast in three main sections: Allegretto, Lento, and Allegretto scherzando. It has a nice flow with plenty of interesting melodic content for performer and listener alike. The work primarily uses tenor clef with a few measures of bass clef for low passages. Capriccio could be a nice alternative to Berio’s Sequenza V or Rabe’s Basta. A sample score and recorded excerpt can be found at: www.warwickmusic.com.
