Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 6+ brass (choir)

This well-known music is often used for ceremonial purposes but this arrangement seems intended as concert music for a younger brass choir. Just 48 measures long, we get one complete statement of the original material, AABACA, with no indicated repeats or alternative cadences. Rhythms are simple. However, the first trumpet part features an effective sixteenth note, obbligato line over the last A section. Range and tessitura are moderate with the exception of first b-flat trumpet, which rises to written c3. The arrangement is suitable for a young, high school level brass choir with the exception of this part. The music is scored well with logical dynamic direction and variety of orchestration that passes melody from trumpet to horn and trombone. Score and parts are full size and clear.

Unfortunately, several problems detract from the quality of the product. Low brass instrumentation is odd, scored for tenor and bass trombone instead of three or four parts. Bass trombone functions as second trombone most of the time. The last two measures of the first trombone part appear on a second page, which seems unnecessary. Many errant notes appear in score and parts that take time to sort out and that should have been caught in editing. The short duration of this bare bones arrangement and lack of editorial direction leave it less than ideal for either concert or ceremonial purposes. It can be used for both with modification; just be ready for the extra work.
