For many trombonists, the Bordogni-Rochut Melodious Etudes are an important part of a daily practice routine. In his new book Melodious Accompaniments, Seattle Symphony Orchestra trombonist David Ritt presents accompaniment melodies to all sixty etudes found in Book I of the Bordogni-Rochut. When played along with the original etudes, which are not included in this book, the resulting duets add a whole new dimension to the familiar melodies we know so well.

The accompaniment etudes are well-composed and enjoyable to play. Their difficulty level and range is similar to the corresponding original etude. Ritt maintains a good mix of homophonic and independent motion between the two voices and adds enough variety to make each accompaniment sound unique. The page turns and line breaks line up between the two duet parts for convenience in stopping and starting. The overall layout is clean, consistent and easy to read. Ritt also includes a Foreword that describes the overall goal of these accompaniments as well as general thoughts and ideas about creating a smooth legato style on the trombone.

This book is an excellent addition for any trombonist who regularly plays the Bordogni-Rochut etudes. I can see it being a great tool for students to use together in the practice room. It is also valuable for teachers, giving them a way to play along with students on their assigned etudes. It is nice to have accompaniments to all sixty etudes, and similar to the original book, Ritt’s book provides music that challenges a wide range of abilities. Overall, it is an excellent new addition to our repertoire.
