Primary Genre: Solo Tenor Trombone - unaccompanied

The Trombone According to Hoyle was composed for Don Lucas and is a versatile addition to the solo tenor trombone repertoire from awarding winning composer Eddie Bass. As the title suggests, each of the eight movements are influenced by card play and cover a broad spectrum of styles. “Four of a Kind” is a scherzando movement. The fanfare-like “Royal Flush,” the bluesy “Queen of Hearts,” and the appropriately named “High-low Mambo” describe just a few of the movements. The work can be programed in its entirety or in portions by combining individual movements. The versatility of the movements allows for any number to be combined and performed. Bass and tenor clefs are employed in this exciting composition, which covers a wide range from B to e-flat2. Plunger and straight mute are required.

An extensive array of effects are utilized including tongue slaps, flutter tongue, growls, glissandi, rips, falls, multiphonics, singing, tapping the music stand or instrument, audible foot tapping, and even vibrato “alla Dorsey.” The music is clearly marked, allowing for easy interpretation of all the effects. Performed in its entirety, this piece is taxing, clearly aimed at advanced trombonists. Like all Warwick publications, quality of paper and print is superb and sturdy.
