Giulio Marco Bordogni
Complete Vocalises for Trombone:

Arranged by Michael Mulcahy

Maple City, MI, United States
Publisher: Encore Music Publishers
Date of Publication: 2008

Primary Genre: Study Material - etude

Many trombonists are familiar with Marco Bordogni’s Vocalises as transcribed by Joannès Rochut. Michael Mulcahy has complied all 120 Vocalises into one volume that is durable and spiral bound. This volume stands out from other editions due to Mulcahy’s comments and editing. An informative introduction includes historical information, a guide to interpretation, phrasing recommendations, and ornamentation advice. Mulcahy views the Vocalises as studies in music, not just legato. He states that every performance decision should be carefully scrutinized. His comments are extremely helpful and will force many trombonists familiar with the Vocalises to approach them differently. The full range of ornaments are included from turns and trills to acciaccaturas. Bass and tenor clefs are used throughout with alto clef incorporated halfway into the book. Some dynamic markings are included but much is left to the performer. When a vocalise is transposed, Mulcahy makes note of the original key. Halfway through the book, he includes a helpful list of questions to guide performers and keep them on track. The Complete Vocalises for Trombone is recommended for those needing additional insight into Bordogni and his Vocalises or for those studying these staples of trombone literature for the first time.
