Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 6+ brass (choir)

The 6-part Ricercare from J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering, one of his greatest masterpieces, is of awe-inspiring complexity, and may contain coded references to a number of biblical texts, including each of the 10 Commandments. It has been transcribed for many different instrumental combinations, none more inherently powerful than the large brass ensemble chosen by Mr. Sauer. He has employed these forces with subtlety and restraint; using ever-changing combinations to create a rich tapestry of sonorities while preserving clarity of texture. All 14 instruments play together in only 8 out of 205 measures, including the last three. The dynamic rises above mf in only one measure before the last page, which is marked maestoso, with all parts fortissimo. The final chord of C major is majestically spread over five octaves.

All four trombones have interesting parts with extended melodic lines. 4th part is the first to play, with the third statement of the principal subject in measure 17, followed by 1st part playing its fourth entry in measure 25. The first sectional tutti is in measure 66. Each section is given 2 statements of the main subject. The secondary subjects are equally well distributed. This is a most expertly written and imaginative arrangement and will be a great experience for anyone who has opportunity to play it. Range for 1st trombone is d–g1, and for 4th is F–b-flat. The original key of C minor is preserved. Production of score and parts is exemplary. A single composite tuba part is also provided.
