Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 5 brass

This aria from “Samson and Delilah” has been scored for brass quintet using flugelhorns instead of trumpets and in the key of D-flat major. In the last chorus, the melody is written in the trombone part, reflecting the Samson character. The integrity of the melodic line is retained. Therefore, knowledge of the text and appropriate moments to breathe will aid performance. While not completely a solo with quartet accompaniment, it is essential that the remaining four parts perform with consistent articulation and rhythmic precision. As with most arias, there is a certain tempo flexibility that should be honored and dictated by the soloist. Obvious benefit will come from listening to the original orchestration. Clear phrase, articulation, and dynamic indications are given. There are moments when ranges reach extremes: horn down to written f, trombone to b-flat1, tuba to FF, and there are several large skips in the accompaniment parts. Control of register shifts will facilitate an elegant performance.

At first glance this work does not seem particularly challenging. However, the musical maturity required to successfully perform it is demanding. Many ensemble skills can be learned here; this might be a good selection for a college brass quintet, or alternatively for a professional quintet in a commercial or concert setting.
