Hot Pursuit was written for John Marcellus by British composer, John Frith, and represents a fun, catchy and challenging addition to the repertoire for trumpet, trombone and piano. The piece is tonal with lots of perfect fourths and fifths and not overly programmatic. Rhythmic outer sections surround a slower and more lyrical middle section. The interlocking figures, changing rhythmic values and meters will require preparation and rehearsal. Trombone tessitura extends from F to d2, trumpet g to c3 and is not likely to be too fatigue inducing, as the more sustained lines are found in the lower to middle range. The work should be playable by advanced undergraduate level students.
