Randall Malmstrom’s eight trombone arrangement of Jean Sibelius’s epic symphonic poem Finlandia is powerful, effective and challenging. The majestic brass writing of the original translates well in this version for two bass trombones and six tenors. The eight instruments cover a large range, AA-flat to e flat2, to create that epic quality. However, the occasional blisteringly fast sextuplet string interjections from the original do not adapt as readily. The individual virtuosity required to pull off these passages is reduced by dividing them at the eighth note between parts five and six of the ensemble. The overall effect is to partially substitute individual virtuosity for ensemble virtuosity. The arrangement is thoughtfully done with only moderate deviations in form from the original: the exaggerated and unexpected long note after the first fanfare figure in Sibelius’s original is cut short, the repetition of the initial allegro and the transition to the “hymn section” are omitted and the “hymn” itself is reduced. The work is well-suited for advanced players looking for an ensemble challenge with a dramatic musical statement.
