Many strategies, programs and books are available to help trombonists approach their instrument naturally, comfortably and without pain. Yoga, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, acupuncture, massage, meditation and chiropractic adjustment are but a few of the paths one can choose in this burgeoning industry. But in a field crowded with ideas, there is certainly room for another helpful voice, especially if it is Drs. Allan R. Kaplan and Norwood M. Yamini doing the talking.

Known for his many years as a trombonist and teacher – since 1995, Professor of Trombone at New Mexico State University – Allan Kaplan has teamed with postural alignment specialist Norwood Yamini to articulate a sensible approach to playing without pain through a series of exercises and an understanding of our body’s physical interconnectedness. The seven principles of movement alignment technique (MAT) are simply stated and developed in depth to help dispel myths about how pain while playing is caused and relieved. Helpful “Try This!” sections give immediate understanding of concepts. When done regularly and properly, the six MAT exercises – clearly explained in text and drawings – work together to help remove tension, develop strength, and reduce pain. The lengthy section on “Common Trombone Player Mistakes” is a welcome compendium of the gyrations we often put our bodies through without even being aware of them; the accompanying photographs of Kaplan playing trombone clearly show correct and incorrect postures and approaches to playing.

The book is clear and well written, spiral bound on high-quality paper with crisp black and white photographs and drawings, and a calm, sympathetic, helpful and positive tone that neither scolds nor preaches. The iBook version is identical to the print volume apart from its lower price, instant delivery, and full color photographs. The Trombone Player’s Survival Guide should be a welcome addition to any player or teacher’s library, and implementation of its ideas will certainly help trombonists approach the instrument in a more healthy and productive way - highly recommended.
