Canadian composer, Malcolm Forsyth, wrote Solemn Intrada in 1980 for the Moravian Trombone Consort of Downey, California. This chorale-like piece is somber in character with chromatic passages that keep the listener engaged. A short tasteful bell-tone section acts as an interlude between the main chorale section and the closing statement of the chorale. The score calls for two each of soprano, alto, tenor, and bass trombones. However, all parts but the soprano trombone, which ranges from d1 to g2, can be comfortably performed on tenor or bass trombone. The range is the most challenging component, otherwise moderately advanced performers can perform this piece.
Additional parts for performance with brass choir are included for those that may not have access to soprano trombones. An arrangement for two trumpets, two horns in F, two tenor trombones, and two bass trombones makes this piece more accessible to a wider range of performers. Trumpet parts in both B-flat and C are generously included. Solemn Intrada is a masterful, modern take on Moravian trombone ensemble music. This piece works well for performance during a religious service or as a serious recital piece.
