Frank H. Seikmann
Quintessence for Brass Quintet:

Kutztown, PA, United States
Publisher: Brelmat Music
Date of Publication: 2009

Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 5 brass

Frank Seikmann has long been associated with Kutztown State University in Pennsylvania. His Concerto for Bass Trombone is a staple of the repertoire and was written for Charlie Vernon of the Chicago Symphony. Quintessence is a showpiece for brass quintet that skillfully weaves together several different styles in a pleasing, idiomatic way. The piece veers away from its opening fanfare into a contrapuntal texture that cleverly incorporates each voice. Mutes and flugelhorns enhance the following impressionistic section that then gives way to a punchy, jazzy vignette. The piece closes with a powerful flourish. In four minutes Seikmann is able to challenge a college level brass quintet and sustain a series of styles that demonstrates its capabilities. Quintessence will make an excellent opening for a recital program.
