Primary Genre: Solo Tenor Trombone - with piano

Composer and trombonist, T. Edward (Ted) Vives, is music director for the Los Alamos Community Winds. True to its title, his Delineation is a fairly brief work featuring two movements contrasting modern and jazz idioms. The first movement, Tempiem, marked at quarter note = 30 features a meandering sixteenth line in the piano over which the slow, sustained trombone melody floats in a watery and contemplative texture. The movement concludes with a short multi-phonic passage of parallel fifths that foreshadows the second movement, Tuayem, which is marked “laid back and jazzy.” Written in compound meter, Tuayem, projects a lyrical trombone line over walking bass with lots of parallel fifths and seventh chords. The piece concludes with a glissando to high f-sharp. Although Delineation may not be completely convincing in terms of its modern style, a quasi-jazzy work, it is approachable and playable both for trombone and piano.
