Rob Hudson is the Associate Archivist at Carnegie Hall in New York City and a freelance trombonist, composer and arranger. He has a bachelor’s degree in music education from Lawrence University and a master’s degree in jazz trombone performance from the Eastman School of Music. He has taught jazz history, jazz arranging, and directed jazz ensembles at the University of New Hampshire, the University of Connecticut, and the Eastman School of Music. Hudson is the author of Evolution: The Improvisational Style of Bob Brookmeyer (2003), and composer of Easy Blue Trumpet (2004). His jazz compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Eastman Jazz Ensemble, the University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band, the Harvard Jazz Band, and others.

Progressively arranged, these studies provide trombonists with a wide variety of musical and technical challenges from beginning to intermediate levels. The first twenty range from beginning level to grade 3 and the remainder are playable by a good high school trombonist. The last etude contains tenor clef; the rest are all in bass clef. Their length ranges from 12 to 71 bars and encompass classical, jazz, funk, rock and other traditional and popular styles. The titles to the various studies may help maintain interest for young students and include the following: TCome Along, Entrata, Sad Song, Bluetude, Serenade, Ballad for T.D., Lullaby, Lucky's Blues, Melancholy Melody, Blues for Fred, Even So, Swingin', Dance of the Brigands, Anticipation, Waves, Movin' Up, Embellishment, Mercury Rising, Duke & Billy, Scherzo, Danzon, Eastern Dance, Song for K.W., Cakewalk, Ivan's Lament, Funketude, Hear a New Story, Spyware, Bird House and The Chase.
