Serenade was written in 1893 for cello and piano. It was orchestrated as Op.37 in 1903 and dedicated at that time to the composer’s son Andrey. This piece is built from simple materials and it doesn’t wander far from home. The initial Allegretto tempo and 9/8 meter are maintained throughout; there is little melodic or harmonic development, and this serenader could quite easily become an unwanted suitor overstaying his welcome. However, mature technical control, perfect intonation, beauty of tone and expressive intelligence will as always save the day. In this music, you can add something of your own; as you play, just think of the one you love. It will make all the difference. The tenor trombone version is given in A-flat, range G–c2, and is written in tenor clef throughout. The bass trombone version is in B-flat, range AA–d1.
