Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 5 brass

This popular (at one time) waltz made Rosas the first Mexican composer to achieve international status. Dating back to 1884, the music is often utilized as background setting for circus acts. It was also popularized in the film "The Great Caruso" in 1951. Prater's arrangement provides an introduction, tema, and four brief variations. While none of the settings are particularly uplifting, this piece could function in recital as serviceable filler material, as opposed to occupying a place of prominence. In addition to a tango, minuet, and finale, Prater includes a "Meditation" variation. This ranges the farthest afield, as it utilizes Harmon mute, ‘rag over bell,’ and multiple suspensions and chromaticism to create an exotic atmosphere. Although the score calls for tuba, the bass part can be easily played on bass trombone, which is preferable for the F to c glissandi.
