Ralph Sauer continues to arrange idiomatic yet challenging music for trombone and piano. Album Leaves Op.28 was composed by Edvard Grieg and published in 1878 for solo piano. This rendition is a four movement work, each movement showcasing different characters and musical intentions. The arrangement is well thought out with included “chop-breaks” in which the piano takes over the solo line from the trombonist. Some of the movements have cuts, usually by not taking repeats, making it possible for the trombonist to perform this work on a longer recital. The arrangement will also periodically omit some of the ornate embellishment that is common practice in piano performance, however, the integrity of the work is never compromised. The playful nature of this composition makes the collaboration with the pianist challenging; the second movement is especially delicate and rubato in nature, allowing the trombonist to perform with much freedom and expression. Written in tenor clef and demanding both technically and musically, it provides an ambitious student a difficult test and a professional trombonist a work to showcase their artistry. This wonderful arrangement is perfect for any recital and a great addition to your library.
