Drummond Hudson brings his extensive experience as a performer and educator to bear with volume 1 of Let’s Play Trombone. The first of three volumes available through Cherry Classics starts, as Professor Hudson describes in the introduction, “at the very beginning, explaining the basics of music notation, specific techniques and concepts of how to play the trombone.” From there he goes on to include lessons on sound production, embouchure, articulation, reading music, and so much more. In addition, each exercise is accompanied by detailed instructions. Beginning trombonists are encouraged to read the instructions carefully before playing each one.

The course of study gradually increases in difficulty, slowly expanding melodic range and transitioning from long tones to notes of shorter duration. Lip slurs and accents are introduced and students are eventually exposed to playing in all keys. Many of the nineteen “lessons” or chapters include a review of previously learned material and Professor Hudson has even dedicated space in the text to introduce false tones and pedal tones. This method book addresses the needs of the beginner well; students are encouraged to follow up with volume 2 after developing the skills introduced here.

This book is certainly worth investigating if you teach beginners or are looking for a clearly planned pedagogical approach to the trombone. Its availability via download straight from cherryclassics.com is an additional benefit. As many adapt to the rapidly changing demands of teaching, it is comforting to know quality materials are just a click away.
