The information he supplies for this short (c. 9 minutes), four movement piece is as follows: These well-known tunes will be familiar to many players. Familiar in their original form that is. I have taken the liberty of using these melodies and transforming them into different styles. Aside from them being fun to play, they demonstrate how recognized tunes can be performed in different styles, and also ensures that young players need to play what they are looking at – and not play what they think is how it goes. For classical players, these pieces all provide an insight into how to ‘Jazz things up a bit.’

  1. Minuet in Gazz With apologies to Bach The opening section should be played in the style as it was originally intended by JS Bach. Then from D, you have license to have some fun with the jazzed-up feel. Ensure you maintain a moderate tempo, don’t be tempted to play it too fast.
  2. Furry Lease Für Elise With apologies to Beethoven The opening (and recurring) Cadenza can be extended/embellished as required. Just ensure you give a solid lead in with the three pick up notes at the end of each cadenza into the next bar. The tango should be very rhythmic.
  3. Ludwig’s Day Off With apologies to Beethoven There are no surprises with the opening solo, but the piano accompaniment will provide the amusement factor. Most audience members will know Ode to Joy but may not have heard it in this style. In the section from E - theme from Pastorale Symphony, make the most of the fun factor in bar 43.
  4. Ash Grove With apologies to Mr. Traditional This is the longest and trickiest piece in this collection. The high register is extended a little further. This is a well-known traditional tune that many will know in its original waltz time. Once the piano has set the scene, play this in a relaxed jazzy style. The section between E and F can be a little more intense. Have fun exploring the different settings of these wonderful classic melodies!

This is well crafted, interesting, stylistically diverse music intended for intermediate (middle school) level players. It not only covers a variety of idioms, styles, articulations and dynamics but also gives the teacher incentive to have the students explore some of the famous classical pieces that are quoted. Another plus is the piano part which is also playable by a younger student. The score and parts are beautifully printed by Warwick Music.
