Primary Genre: Brass Ensemble - 5 brass

Lord, Rebuke me not in thy wrath : di Lasso’s setting in the Phrygian (3rd) Mode is in five parts, SATTB, and was included in a collection of seven penitential psalms that he wrote in 1562 and published in 1584. This arrangement is for two trumpets in B-flat, Horn in F, Trombone, and Tuba or Bass Trombone, with the tempo indication Andante con moto, and a key signature of C major/A minor. It is suitable for moderately advanced performers.

The 5-part texture is maintained throughout with few rest measures in any part, seven for bass trombone, four for Trumpets 1 and 2, two for horn, and only one in the Trombone part, which is in bass clef and covering the range c – e1. Its last five measures are marked ‘To the Fore’. Bass trombone covers E - c1, and 1st Trumpet f-sharp1 - f-sharp2. Horn goes up to b1.

Di Lasso was born in the Belgian city of Mons in 1532. In 1556 he became a singer at the court of King Albrecht V of Bavaria, and in 1563 he was appointed Maestro di Capella, holding that position until his death in Munich in 1594. He was the composer of more than 2,000 pieces, many of which were published during his lifetime.

Russell McKinney is currently a free-lance bass trombonist based in the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) area of North Carolina, performing frequently in the NC Opera Orchestra and the North Carolina Symphony.
