Primary Genre: Solo Tenor Trombone - with piano

Pequeña Nana translates to “little lullaby.” This beautiful Adagio melody for trombone with piano accompaniment totals 42 measures in simple, quadruple meter. Written in B-flat major, the melody is uniformly diatonic and spans G-b-flat. The piano part consists mostly of slowly arpeggiated chords, some rhythmic texture, and a few extra pitches here and there to fill out the harmonies.

While perhaps best suited to a trombonist in their first or second year of study, Paqueña Nana might also provide an ideal opportunity for a teacher to demonstrate the lyricism that is possible in the mid to lower tessitura of the instrument. Written in the well established AABA song form, the melody provides a good balance of repetition and contrast. Being both widely accessible and rewarding to play, Paqueña Nana will likely find its way into many teaching studios as a first solo piece with piano.
